Some would say that all art has a message, at the very least making an aesthetic statement. But some works of art were and are created intentionally to persuade the viewer to accept a specific idea or to move them to take action. The art does so by appealing to the emotions, using forms of visual hyperbole or distortion, asking the viewer to respond viscerally rather than rationally or logically. We see this kind of thing daily in advertising and politics, but we tend not to be aware of it in “art.” This 2-session class (1.5 hrs long per session) with historian and retired USN teacher MARC LAVINE will open your eyes to a way of seeing art and ask the question - “is it art or propaganda?”
