Instructor: Molly Secours

This class is for anyone who has never given much thought to what Whiteness means or how the lack of questioning the meaning contributes to systemic racism.

The class is for anyone who cares about social and racial equity and fairness but has not actually wrestled with the opposite--White advantage.

Author of "White Privilege Pop Quiz", filmmaker, and public speaker MOLLY SECOURS walks us through some pivotal and seldom asked questions which help us understand how even those of us who reject racism and overt forms of racial prejudice can inadvertently (and unfortunately) perpetuate systemic racism by avoiding the discussion of Whiteness.

As a filmmaker (not a scholar or an educator), Secours' perspective is one of reflection in plain terms how Whiteness plays a role in our lives and works like an American Express card in that we 'never leave home without it'. We will explore how and why it is we tend to talk about Black poverty but not White wealth--as if there is no correlation. How the words Black on Black crime roll off our tongues without acknowledging that White on White crime is far more common.

With compassion and humor, Secours helps us navigate the wilderness of Whiteness and offers a compass to find our way to more meaningful discussions, new understandings that will help disrupt systemic racism in every days situations regardless of age, profession, education or wealth.

Bring your questions, concerns, confusions with an open mind and heart. The class is conversational and participation is optional.

Molly Secours

Molly Secours, an esteemed filmmaker, writer and public speaker based in Nashville, Tenn., has been a voice for social change for much of her adult life. She has produced more than 60 films and videos about disparities in education, criminal justice and healthcare.

Yet perhaps her greatest contribution to America comes in the form of her newly-authored book entitled White Privilege Pop Quiz, a poignant, 130-page work that urges audiences to unearth their deepest biases by simply taking a quiz that reveals “White Privilege”--a term that has been thrust into the country’s consciousness due to the Black Lives Matter movement and recent social protests through the United States.
